Black Panther’s Next Game Just Vanished Into Development Limbo

A previously announced video game focused on a storyline involving Black Panther and Captain America, Steve Rogers, has been delayed indefinitely.

Announced in a social media post by creators Skydance Games, no new date has been provided for the release, titled “Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra,” as developers continue to craft together the video game. Earlier this year, they announced that the video game would be delayed until early 2026 as the developers needed to “polish” it up. It was initially planned for a 2025 release.

“Marvel 1943: Rise of Hydra” is set to be a narrative-driven action-adventure game that sees Black Panther collaborate with Captain America during World War II to prevent the establishment of Hydra, a fictional organization. There are reportedly four playable characters, namely Captain America, Black Panther, Gabrial Jones and Nanali.

The game is based on the 2010 limited Marvel Comics series, “Captain America/Black Panther: Flags of Our Fathers.” Comic book writer Marc Bernardin was confirmed to be involved in the project, drafting the game’s narrative. Previously, Bernardin has earned credits as the writer of Marvel comic books such as “Star Wars: Mace Windu,” “King in Black: Planet of the Symbiotes #2” and “Dark X-Men: The Beginning #2.”

In their statement, Skydance Games emphasized that this is an “ambitious project” that requires a “level of quality” that gamers should expect.

“To fully realize our vision for MARVEL 1943: Rise of Hydra, we’ve made the decision to shift our release window beyond early 2026,” said the gaming company. “We’re grateful for the passion and support from the community and players around the world. The team is working hard to create something truly special, and we look forward to sharing more with you as development progresses.”

The latest news from Skydance comes months after a third-person perspective video game featuring Black Panther as the main character was canceled. Initially announced in 2023 in tandem with the 57th anniversary of the first comic books featuring the character, the game was reportedly shelved after the developer, Cliffhanger Games, was shut down.

Less than 300 staffers were let go as part of its closure. Had it been developed, the untitled video game helmed by Kevin Stephens would have been the first to feature Black Panther as the only main character.

Instead of developing the project, the EA company will focus on franchises such as “The Sims,” “Apex Legends” and “Battlefield.”
