Black Men Who Vote for Trump Identify With His Power

Last weekend, at a yearly gathering thrown by my favorite uncle, who was a 20-year disabled Army vet, I met a real-live Black Trump supporter in the flesh, and let me tell you, the amount of stupidity he exuded was not just maddening, but was utterly astounding. I have always wondered what happened to the kids who needed a few extra days to read a paragraph, and here was one of them, in the flesh.  I am not sure how the election came up, but I surely know that it ended with him voicing quite loudly that I disrespected him when he tried to hug me after I walked away (due to the possibility of brain rot being contagious), and I asked to not be touched—but before the conversation even reached that height, it was already headed downhill from the start.

There I was, sitting next to a man who said that Kamala did not have the “balls to lead.” When I questioned if his statement was metaphorical, he affirmed that it was indeed about her genitalia (heavy sigh).  I will spare you most of the minutiae, but just know that even when presented with facts, not only did he not care, but he found another thing to be his guide to hell steadfastly. It did not matter if he was proven wrong about the economy, or the fact that the United States was indeed engaged in warfare when Trump was in office, or the fact that he did not know that Israel and Palestine (which he pronounced Palesteen) had conflict decades before Oct. 7, none of this mattered. Facts are not important when you are taught that women are beneath you, or anyone without balls for that matter, and that is possibly who could be this country’s ultimate authority.

On the other side of me sat my distant cousin—who admonished me to not become an old cat lady even after I told him that I liked cats— informed me it was bad, but not why. He then reminded me that I would need something more to take care of than my cats, at which point I informed him that was why I had a puppy. He was a bit more on the fence than Full Metal Jacket to my right was, but again, how are you on the fence about two diametrically different candidates?

How are you, as a Black man, siding with white supremacy and thinking that you will advance or even be considered human?

I’m not sure if this should have been as shocking to me as it was, but neither man believed that adults could be sex trafficked and that Diddy’s victims were willing participants.  My very distant cousin even attempted to justify the video of Diddy beating Cassie mercilessly. He did not know if she was trying to leave the relationship or just the hotel, as if either of those things mattered, but he did question why she did not leave the relationship and remained with him as long as she did. He did not think that adult women could become sex trafficked but would possibly vote for a rapist who did not think that women should have autonomy over their own bodies.

It is hard for me to imagine that I share DNA, even distantly, with someone who is such an ill-equipped thinker.

Yesterday, at a Trump rally in Saginaw, Michigan, a group of vendors got into a fistfight, which ended in two Black men, donned in Trump regalia, being pummeled by White vendors as onlookers watched. The party members who vilify division (that they cause) unfortunately did not step in to unite the races. Being embarrassed by the same people you kiss up to and wish to be like will probably not deter their stupidity. The Black vendors can put on the clothes of poor White people, but will never been seen as equals, at best, they are just branded willful slaves. I am sure they were just trying to do their Black job but did not realize that job is doing the dirty work of the oppressor.

I asked my very distant cousin, if he ever needed a lawyer to defend him in a criminal case, who would he choose Harris or Trump, after serious thought, and even asking what the charge would be (not that it matters), he finally chose Harris. The fact that it took him a minute to decide between the lawyer and the felon was a sight in itself. However, he stated that when it came to the economy, he would choose Trump. I reminded him he was choosing the man who had filed for bankruptcy six times. He looked hurt by having to come to terms with his stupidity and make a choice about what to do next. I also reminded him of that cat chat we had earlier in the night, that I would be a high-risk pregnancy if I did indeed allow myself to care for something more than my pets, and that if I were to get pregnant and have a tubular pregnancy, we live in a state that would let me die, and Trump supports the state’s right to allow that. Are there Black female Trump supporters? Surely, but Black men make up the lion’s share of Black Trump supporters. Black men are at the intersection of power and oppression; many are smart enough to know that; many are not. For the many who are not, when it comes to a biracial Black and Asian woman versus a white man, they are going to side with the power, no matter how corrupt.

Why would they want to identify with someone who represents the most oppressed parts of them? When you are raised to believe that women are beneath you, and you believe it, you surely are not going to vote for a minority woman to have more power.

Without minority women, what will you have to look down on with satisfaction and confidence as you struggle to gain more power for yourself?
